Is the Answer, Answers?

The other night I encountered a small-framed man, with a weathered face and hauntingly dark eyes. He carried burdens, which appeared to obstruct his ability to feel compassion for others. He unpacked his story, pain by pain, as if listening ears are few and far between.

Noticing subtle characteristics of his nature as he spoke I sympathized knowing that the only words, desires and actions I could offer to “fix” his problems were useless. To use a metaphor, if he needed a blanket to get warm I could only offer a needle and thread, with no fabric or knowledge of how to make it.

Why do I have such a good life when others don’t? Why do I have opportunities to make my aspirations a reality when others can't? Why was my childhood amazing when for others its hell? Why do I have food on my plate and a roof over my head when others go without? I simply don’t know.

I understand that people make bad choices, as do I, and there are consequences. But sometimes people face darkness with no other option than to battle through; sometimes people are even born into it. I’ve learnt that I’m naive, sometimes believing I have answers for someone suffering on levels I can’t comprehend?

Naturally I want to have all the answers so I can help an individual but I realize answers are overrated. For the victim in these situations, answers can seem so far away when you’ve already walked so far and answers can sometimes take away someone’s only paddle while they are stranded up a certain creek.

My conclusion is answerless. I have a savior and I can’t be Him for someone else. However I can imitate His manifestation and simply meet others exactly where they are, to listen and care. It’s not an easy thing to do; perhaps even a “sacrifice”, but if it helps a broken soul smile then it’s worth it.

The Land Down, Down Under

The day the rain began to fall, just days before the raging waters swept through the state I reside, I was getting on a plane headed for the most southern part of the country. Off to a place that claims to have the worlds purest oxygen and a place I hoped would have perfect skating conditions. A placed we call Tasmania.

Common skateparks are filled with lots of interesting characters, mostly youth, lots of trash and story’s that can make your heart ache. For the duration of the trip, this is where we were lead to bring love, encouragement and garbage bags in hope that people would dare to give the God of Abraham a chance.

Only by His grace we had, the perseverance to visit fifty skateparks in a month, the motivation to pick up forty-five bags full of rubbish, the passion to pray for the people we encountered, transport, food and a place to rest. And with great joy I can share that 175 New Testament bibles found a home.

The point wasn’t to get people “saved”, who on earth has authority to even judge people’s salvation? It is written that nobody can achieve this status, but only by His grace, through Jesus, and a repentant heart can we truly know Him.

Let those who crossed our path continue to search for truth in their heart, in order to receive the gift of life.

Ever felt Helpless?

I’m thankful that all my grandparents, both mum and dad’s side, are with us to this day. I enjoy being with them, hearing about where they’ve come and inheriting wisdom from their lives. Time with them is always time well spent.

When I got word to prepare to say “adios” to granddad, the old stomach dropped and I didn’t really know what to do apart from pray my butt off. After a trip to the hospital waiting room we arrived home early the next morning with a kick in the head from reality and a tiny bit of hope.

“Sure he’s come though worse in the past, he’s gonna make it” I tell myself as the somber feeling of helplessness threatens to cut off the little hope I mustered together. As if my granddad and family are aboard a ship in unfamiliar waters, trying to find peace while rocked by the waves of a fierce storm.

Though I don’t know the size of the canvas God is painting on, I’m a witness to situations being tangibly changed by a prayer, so we asked for help. The support of others was significant regardless of the outcome, whether it be a simple prayer or a consolable act towards the fam and I.

Miraculously granddad pulled through the first 24 hours, then the following fortnight before a crucial operation, where his chances would be minimized again. He not only comes out of that one A-ok but the results showing insignificant signs of anything wrong with him. He is back home and doing well and doctors are surprised to say the least.

The fam and I are thankful for the enduring support from friends, some who haven’t got to know my granddad personally, diligently directing their prayers towards our circumstance. I don’t have all the answers of why things happen the way they do and how my granddad pulled through.

My belief is no more important than anyone else's, I just wanted to share this story from my perspective and perhaps if you ever find yourself in a helpless place it will bring you hope too. Peace be with you.

Where You Invest Love, You Invest Life

Here is the print I did for the 'Born to Ill' exhibition a few weeks back. It's kind of an exploration of a statement; where you invest your love, you invest your life.

The bright light at the back represents destiny, purpose or for me God. The girl is everything that keeps us from fulfilling/ following it, that's gonna look different for everyone so you can fill in the blanks. Finally the man represents us when we 'invest our love' into the diversion, for the duration of that time we feel quite lifeless, which is why he is a skeleton... get it?

Skatefest #1

Recently we teamed up with a promotions company for a skate event at the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers. My buddy Dan has been living there for a year now so it was good to catch up and do an event with him. It was so dang cold there and ended up raining but it didn't seem to slow down the carnival and all the flowers looked pretty...

In the mix was a few best trick comps and game of S.K.A.T.E on the super mellow mini and sketchy portable stair/ rail gap. The skaters were quite talented and majority were also humble and thankful for the opportunity to compete, which can be a breath of fresh air in our skate culture. They also weren't afraid to get wet in a longest power slide comp on the slippery surface which made for a good laugh.

We will collaborate with Kaydee Promotions again at the end of the month in Goodna for a another round of madness and a deep bag of prizes. 3-6 pm, Sunday 31st October, Evan Marginson Park, Goodna.

Parcels of LOVE

He constantly gives us parcels filled with love then takes a risk trusting us to deliver them to our communities, orphans, widows and the poor. Man, what a privilege it is to know that He actually wants us to play a role in a purpose far beyond just ourselves.

People need grace, whether we know it or not. I’m stoked to help strengthen a group that actively loves our neighbours. “Prayers for Grace” is a new opportunity to get a heart for our community. It’s just a whiteboard that quite easily becomes a tool to remind us to pray for others around us, especially those who are struggling in those dark places.

The notion of loving people with an agenda makes me uncomfortable, sometimes it seems like a more sly way of pushing your beliefs onto a person, at least that’s how I feel. Learning to love your neighbour as yourself is freakin’ hard work… would it be wrong to even suggest that it’s impossible to do by our selves?

People are being introduced to the real God all the time. I met a troubled friend recently who was reminded that God hadn’t forgotten about her... she was on the side of the road waiting for a bus so we offered a ride home. After she saw that we weren’t trying to harm her she agreed and even invited us in for tea.

During the couple hours spent with her, we just listened and couldn't help but respond with compassion to her story, it was a fun night. The whole incident set about after a prayer, specifically for a location and description of a person who needed some love. After that we simply went in faith and found her, how many others are out there waiting to receive a parcel of love from God?

Three Sixty Project

Paul Munro is a graphic designer from Sydney and also a friend of mine. He was recently inspired by a moving experience in Bali and established the 'Three Sixty Project'.

Here's an overview in his own words:

"Three Sixty Project was birthed from the concept of ‘one for one’. The idea itself is quite simple – for every skateboard we sell we send one overseas (or within Australia) in support of Skate Programs developed to work with youth in that specific area.

Skateboarding is being used all over the world as a tool to engage with and empower youth – to interact with them on a level they know and love. A passion for riding and the lifestyle and culture of skateboarding today allows for a platform where youth and young adults can get off the streets, make friends, gain access to education and most importantly hang out with people that have a genuine interest for their well-being."

It is our vision to serve the established Programs already making a difference in the lives of youth all over the world - with relationships forming in countries like Indonesia, Uganda, South Africa, The Philippines and Outback Australia, and goals to reach more of Asia, Africa and the Middle East."

God is Love and Love is God...

My family has always had a lot of love to give when it comes to these faithful companions. When the time comes to say goodbye it hurts... but the memories easily out way the pain. I delight in this story every time I see it and just wanted to share its beauty with you. Props to the director for doing this story justice.

Skate Church - July

This month’s Skate Church was a good time of skating, hanging out and meeting new people. As far as numbers go, this was possibly the largest crowd this year. Most importantly we all enjoyed the fun, peaceful and welcoming atmosphere.

Local shredder and friend, Nikki, told a story of how God miraculously healed her after a recent traumatic skateboarding accident. She also told of her realisation that we have freewill to make our own choices and sometimes those choices have consequences, which is our responsibility right?

Amazingly so much good has come from the accident and Nikki is building more faith and trust in the Lord. It’s easy to look for someone to blame when things don’t go well and when there is no one, often we blame God. This is contradictory to His character as He takes our shortcomings and uses it for good.

Since being immersed in full-time ministry, I’m learning lots about my identity in Christ Jesus. As a result of sifting through contrasting opportunities, situations and circumstances, a sense of direction and calling is being established in my life.

A common snare of mankind is standing still and expecting destiny or purpose to simply fall into our lap. Standing still can lead to boredom, which allows us to be easily distracted with futile pursuits. While simply being open to new opportunities and giving them a whirl can give us priceless wisdom.

Disregard the voices that tell you it’s impossible and have no fear of mistakes, as these are key chances for change. Eugene Peterson puts it well in Matthew 17:20. “…The simple truth is that if you had a mere kernel of faith… you would say to this mountain, ‘Move!’ and it would move. There is nothing you wouldn’t be able to tackle.”

He says "The heart of making this film is 'to show human value in a devalueing culture'. To show people their worth as Jesus and God the father see's them and this is aimed at all parties of the sex trade all the way to the corrupt police, to the pimps, buyers and clients, Gods love streaches to all those groups! I cant get past Gods unlimited Grace and Mercy for everyone. God made them too, and wants them to be set free from their sins!"

An Encounter With Harmony

Josh Harmony, pro skater and gifted musician, visited for a week to be apart of the Australian Skate ministry Conference. The three-day event was successful in encouraging those who have a passion to serve in the skate culture.

A few days later Josh made an appearance at the Boardstore judging a game of S.K.A.T.E, playing a set in the gallery and meeting with the locals. If you’re after some good music with a good message you should grab his songs on iTunes and support him in his gift.

Skate church has been pumping with the addition of the latest obstacle…a car. There’s been lots of new groms coming to check it out and coming back each month to do it all again. It’s a blessing to serve and provide a fun experience for them.

If you believe that God hears and answers prayers, feel free to say a prayer for my friends and myself as we continue to seek God for guidance in all that’s ahead.

Philippines - Wrapped Up

It’s an escapade that will not be easy forgotten and I believe the transformations that took place in our hearts are eternal. At the end of the trip and after an epic sunrise, five of our crew decided they wanted to be baptised. A cool finale before we went our separate ways.

Our creator is awesome. Not just in the Philippines, He is active all over the world through the faith and involvement of those who respond to His call. He takes our worn/ beat up attempts of living and gives us a gift that will last forever.

For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all people.” Luke 2:30-31

Regarding Skate Ministry

Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” in John 14:6. Jesus death was God’s plan all along to help us out of our immoral actions. According to this verse and as far as my knowledge goes, there is no other person, method or ritual that can guarantee you an eternity with God.

I don’t think I was put on the earth to be an entertainer; therefore travelling around running skate competitions isn’t the easiest thing. But that’s not our incentive… The purpose for the competitions is too serve people, an act of love.

Skateboarding, as much as I enjoy it, is simply one of the tools I have to serve others. My prayer is that through that service, individual’s attention would be directed towards the source where I receive my identity and direction.

Jesus said in John 8:12 “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Philippines - Skate and Revive

Word had spread fast regarding the skate events. The CWC skatepark and surrounding areas were packed with people when we arrived to begin the comp. With the bag of prizes donated by Boardstore and sideline support from the Upright Generation we commenced the event.

It was difficult to keep track of all the competitors. It’s staggering to see the growth of skating as a sport since I was last there. Everything went smoothly until the end when I think one guy broke or dislocated his arm. Two of our posse asked God for his healing on the spot and when we saw him three days later, he was skating again and his arm was fine. Yew!

It all wrapped up with Shannon sharing a story about his life and how it’s changed since he decided to follow Jesus. Many of the skaters mentioned that they could relate with his testimony and decided to take bibles home. After the prize presentation we hung out and skated into the night.

Days later the second skate event “Battle at the Civics” was going down. We gathered in a spot created by the locals at the Naga City Civic Centre. It looked much the same as the previous event (‘Game of Skate’ followed by ‘Best Trick Comp’), lots of people, smooth sailing and talented riders.

Again before the prize ceremony we took the opportunity to share our purpose for organising the comps and Cheets was the storyteller this time round. After this we invited people to respond to the delivered message. God touched their hearts and one by one they came to chat, receive prayer and get a bible.

By the grace of God it’s safe to say the Gospel has made a impact on the skate communities in Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte and Albay with many skater’s beginning a walk with the Lord. I have a heart to see them well lead in discipleship so that they would experience freedom from this world and go on to contribute to a greater kingdom.

Philippines - Familiar Faces In Lovely Places

After a visit to the Mayon Volcano we stopped in Legaspi city (in the province of Albay) to try meet up with some of the local skaters. Last year at the skate event there were many competitors from this city, we planned to meet up and skate their spots with them.

By now it was getting dark so the session was concealed to a small well lit stage near the city centre. We began to skate when a group of about 10 locals rocked up and joined in. I recognized a few of them from the visit last year and we got talking while we rested between tricks.

One of them began sharing with me about how he was affected by the ministry last year. I remembered that we had a chance to pray with him and give him a bible. I was encouraged to see how it impacted him as he’s making big changes in his lifestyle since God touched his heart that day and through reading the bible. He also received healing from an ongoing ankle injury he had, all glory to God.

I know others from our group had some very productive conversations with pedestrians who were gathered to watch the skating. It was fun hanging out there and meeting locals; at the end of the session we invited them all to our upcoming skate event at CWC and Naga Civic Centre.

A few days later we were lead to visit Bagasbas beach in Camarines Norte. Pastor Pat was there earlier in the year and felt a burden to share some of God’s love in the area. There aren’t any churches close by and there is a spiritual darkness looming in the area.

After a quick swim we joined in a word of prayer to ask the Lord to lead us for in afternoon of sharing the faith with people who were interested. I was skeptical of what God would do with us in just one afternoon, but that changed quite fast.

Then we split into small groups and soon met this guy and he invited us into his place. Then we find out he has this sick ghetto skate bowl in his yard! We began to share why we were there and found out he’s also a Christian, the only one in town to his knowledge, talk about divine appointments.

We talked for ages, he told us that skating is getting popular there and that every week groups of them visit him and skate the bowl. He also mentioned how they look up to him and he's been sharing about his walk with the Lord with them. Before we left we prayed for him, did our best to encourage him and got his contact details to plan a skate comp and help him start a skate ministry there.

An hour or so goes by of sharing with and praying with people until we meet up with a group of local skaters, some I already knew from last year. There were about 20 skating at this spot and earlier that day Tom, Cheets and Shannon had shared with them and mentioned the upcoming skate event. Before our time was up we had a chance to pray with a couple of them.

Jocelyn and Dan shared the gospel and prayed for one guy who had suffered from a stroke. A week later some of our group went back to follow up on the visit and saw that the man had been completely healed. Himself and his friends were all praising God and in awe of His power. In just a few hours there was so many cool opportunities that God used on top of opening doors to continue future ministry in the area.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. (Psalm 3:5-6)

Kingdom Builders Summer Camp 2010

Time to go to camp and let the good times roll! This year it was on the campus of a University in the Bicol region. There was a fairly big group of 200+ young people from as far north as Manila City and south as Mindanao (almost the most southern island of the Philippines).

Our heart was to equip, encourage and bless the campers so they could return home and do the same creating a ripple effect. Each day would start with devotions and lead into lectures (from pastors, missionaries and the YWAM team) until lunchtime. Most of the teaching revolved around Mark 4:1-25 (The Parable of the Four Soils) and lots of time was spent unpacking the verses.

Many times we would stop and worship through music giving God the glory for all the cool things He was doing in our lives. I was stoked by the passion that filled the kids and inspired by lots of lives being changed and finding purpose.

Outside of teaching sessions the campers were divided up into tribes, each one lead by a YWAMer and a youth leader. The team members created a tribe flag and war cry before competing in a range of games and activities filling the afternoons and evenings with action packed fun. My team won....... yeh Ashmon! haha

There was another highlight for me also... The days were long, those of us leading had a lack of sleep each night and I got a bit discouraged. Later we had some worship and some prayer for anyone feeling discouraged and God totally strengthened us. The same night there was a ‘talents night’ where I was blown away by all the performances, it was a very cool night.

A lot of positive feedback is still flowing in from the homes of those who attended. It’s such a good investment into the future of the kids but also the Philippines as a nation as these guys with grow up into the next generation of leaders, doctors, business owners ect. It’s a great thing to see them with such a solid foundation in their lives already.

This is how nations begin to change.... one seed at a time until it grows into a forest. May they all continue to be a light and share the good news until next year at Kingdom Builders 2011. God is so awesome, to Him be the glory.

Philippines - Consocep Feeding Program

“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat.....I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” Matthew 25:35-40

So we had settled into our home in Bicol (Philippines) for a few days and I’m stoked because it’s Saturday afternoon and that means it’s time to visit the villages on the mountain (Isarog) for the children’s feeding program.

The youth (Upright Generation) of our church, in Naga City, have embraced the burden of feeding 50-80 hungry children each week in some of the less fortunate villages of the province, this time was the village of Consocep. We got to tag along to the event as guests; this in itself was a powerful experience.

Every Saturday afternoon members of the Upright Generation make the 1 hour journey up the mountain to meet the children. Then we all sit together and sing songs, read stories, play games and learn about the God who loves us all so much. Then when the food is ready, we thank the Lord for His provisions and then it’s feeding time.

Without complaining, fighting or pushing the children line up in single lines and patiently wait their turn to receive something to eat. Some of them, the older ones, would get their food and quickly run back to their younger bro or sis and feed them before finishing what’s left.

Standing in awe of God’s presence in this small village I can’t help but wonder of the lessons we, as a nation blessed with more than it needs, can learn from these children and the young people that are commited to remembering their hungry brothers and sisters.

While we can complain about cold burgers and a long wait for our steak dinners. While many of our young people start drinking and partying on a Saturday afternoon...God’s kingdom is happening before my eyes.

I'm not trying to make you feel depressed... I'm just saying how it is... It's never to late to make a difference...

Philippines Outreach 2010

I write this from Kuala Lumpur airport in Malaysia after a long trip and lack of sleep. Goodtimes. Tomorrow we will embark on an adventure that happens from laying down comforts and commiting to a mission that might seem to big.

I heard a quote recently that made got me thinking “when we give... that which we want the most, we heal the broken part inside each of us… that happiness exists in giving away what you want the most”. When you think about that, how does it make you feel?

Above is the team team I am stoked to be apart of: right to left Nick, Dan and Shannon. They also felt the call and stepped upto the challenge not knowing what lies ahead. They've given up their own personal time (time away from family and annual leave from work) and money to invest into something they believe will impact and change the lives of many people and I believe that its going to happen and they will be blessed.

Its a beautiful thing as we are all real people at differenent places in our lives, but working in unity towards something we all agree will be worth it.

So please if you like, pray for us over the next three weeks :

For unity as a team as we work together.
For strength and courage to see past our own comforts and look at how we can bless others.
For safety as we skate, wakeboard and travel around.
For clarity to see that we have more than enough to see it through.
For wisdom to take on decisions that we might want to turn and run from.

Praise God we are not in this alone and I thank Him for your heart for us.

Reaching the Beach

On Easter Sunday I was at Coolum for the annual "Reach the Beach" skate comp. It was started four years ago, after a young local skater took his own life, to shine some light into the skate community of Coolum and surrounding areas.

The event considered to be one of the biggest skate events in Queensland after people flocked around by the hundreds. The day was loads of fun and we saw loads of talent shredding around the skatepark.

The event also helped us launch the "Pure Parks" project. It was a solid beginning with 80+ bibles handed out, the gospel was shared throughout the day, many were praying over the park and people there and cleaned all the trash around the area. Overall there was good vibe and Jesus was remembered and celebrated. It was totally the way Easter should be.

A few days later, we ran a second skate comp at Alex Heads skatepark as part of the Homegrown music festival. It was good being out there and getting amongst some of the local talent and rewarding their skills with prizes.

Recently I finished a new series of skateboard graphics for Eternal skateboards that should start hitting stores Australia wide this month.

Only two more weeks and I'm off to the Philippines again! The excitement has definently kicked in and we are ready to rumble. We will join up with the YWAM outreach team and work amongst the local ministries, making a positive impact there. Still In The Game

So I spent some time visiting high schools all over Sunny Coast doing skate demonstrations to help promote Youth Alive (www.youthaliveqld.com). It makes me quite nervous having so many eyes on me while jumping over there teachers and fellow students, but it always turns out fun to skate and bless others.

The Pure Parks Australian manual is complete and ready for action. The project will launch this coming weekend at Coolum skatepark for 'Reach the Beach' and continue until all 1132 skateparks are skated, cleaned and prayed over. If you don't already have plans for Easter Sunday come down to Tickle Park and join us for an epic event.

Last Tuesday I we were able to hold a fundraiser at the Cable Park in Bli Bli to raise finances to sponsor Kingdom Builders youth camp next month in the Philippines. Thanks to Kirk who managers the park, we opened it up for 2 hours of riding and auctioning with all proceeds going towards the camp.
By God's grace we have an extra $1700 to take over there next month to support the amazing work that is going on there in Philly's.

Pure Parks Project

How do we get a bible into the hands of every skateboarder in Australia?
A good place to start would be to visit every skatepark over the next five years and give one to every person there.

It seems like a huge goal, as there are 250 skateparks in Queensland alone, but God is huge. There are many of us working on the logistics of the idea at the moment, making a manual, planning trips, building logo's and websites ect.

Each skatepark visited will be cleaned, prayed over to break spiritual strongholds and to invite God to move in that environment. Then skaters bibles will be handed out free to anyone in the area. The nearest churches will also be invited for each visit aswell to help kids get plugged in.

Our base, YWAM Sunny Coast, is committed to see this goal through and we be stoked to have outreach teams going out to minister this way. Also we'll be in contact with other bases and believers to partner as a body and work together.

Soon we will have a package that we can send out to others who would like to be involved so if you think you might be interested feel free to send me an email des@onefriday.org. Soon we'll have a website to keep people updated with all the statistics and testimonies.

A New Year Begins

I have been focusing and praying into the areas of leadership where God has trusted me with. I feel like its an area that I was weak in, before I was coasting along in my own strength and not seeking Him enough.

A by-product of my walk with Jesus is that people look upto me and seek advice, this is not something to take lighthearted, it's their lives that we are speaking into and I feel like the Lord has been showing me how to disciple friends and other believers in a more effective way and that's by looking to Him in everything.

We got our hands on an awesome new skate dvd called 'foolishness' by a group of professional skaters who are also followers of Christ. We had a small premiere at our weekly bible study at boardstore, which went really well. We are looking to hold a bigger event to play to video and show to a large group of skaters. Skate church was powerful last week as Mark Geltch shared parts of His testimony to a large group of kids. They all came out to be apart of a competition we held right there in the carpark on our portable ramp setup.

Last week I shared for a morning to the current DTS (Discipleship Training School) about hearing God and being wholehearted towards Him. It was challenging for me cause i haven't spoke on a DTS before, however my prayers were answered as God spoke through me and some of the students even responded!

The next three months for me are devoted to YWAM's local skate ministry right here on the Sunny Coast; sharing the truth with others who ready to hear it, discipling friends, building relationships and any other opportunities that I am lead in.

Also to continue to help drive the value of 'making God known' to people around me and improving my leadership through humility and courage.

In April I get to lead an overseas outreach back to the Philippines. I am very excited, during last years visit God really gave me a heart for the ministries there. Three of my friends will be joining me on this adventure and we will be partnering with an amzing DTS outreach team from the current school. There will be eleven of us partnering with ministries that are doing amazing things to reach out to people there.

Thanks for taking time to pray for me, I believe every one of those prayers is being heard by our amazing God who continues to blow my mind all the time.

Epic Times

Last weekend i helped organise and run the yearly 'Hinterland Jam' where we visited three skateparks on the Sunshine Coast hinterland to hold a skate competition and reach out to the local skaters there. During the prize ceremony at each event we had an opportunity to share some testimonies with the skaters and the onlookers. Roughly fifty people came out and heard it, some even responded positively, and we gave out skaters bibles to lots of people to read and enjoy.

This ends my first year full-time ministry it has been an awesome adventure. I'm pretty sure there isn't anything material, no amount of money or book knowledge that could give me the joy, satisfaction or wisdom i experienced in this time.

David's words in Psalms continue to become more true for me "Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart". It blows my mind that the talents God has given me can be used to further His kingdom and unlock new passions in me. You give Him your pinky finger and he can take you further than you can comprehend.

Outreaches are always jam packed with life changing adventure and Bali was that.
By the time i arrived on the scene Mark, Jye and Tom had already met with the Bali skate community through a series of skateboard competitions held in partnership with C3 Church Bali.

The comps had been a big hit and over 50 local skaters came to watch and skate at the Puputang spot for the final comp. All the skaters who participated were invited back to the church that night for the Unlimited youth party where they skated some ramps in the carpark and recieved prizes from the previous skate comps. At the party we had a chance to share the gospel and testimonies and alot of them responded to the message and went to the altar to begin a journey with Jesus. So epic!

After we joined in on a high school ministry based at the church and had another opportunity to share testimonies and play games with the students there. We also got to attend at the church that sunday morning where Mark's back got healed.

We really didn't have a plan for the second week but God did.
Daily we saw miracles, growth in our lives, handed out bibles and divine appointments with key people in the skate community.

We fixed all the broken rails and grind boxes for the skaters at one of the spots and built a kicker ramp aswell for the skaters, so now they can enjoy their skating even more.
Now working with C3 church we have awesome opportunities to continue supporting and ministering there in the future as we have been blessed to be a blessing.

Lots in the Pipeline

So this Thursday I am leaving for a short outreach to Bali. I’ll be meeting up with Mark and his son Jye and Tommo to partner with some ministries at work there.
This week we are working with C3 church in Denpasar running four skate competitions leading up to a Youth Party and skate event. Then on 29th of November we meet up with Christian Surfers Elevate to serve with those guys.

I challenge you to pray for us daily (until Dec 5th) for God’s grace, to see His heart for the people there, strength and protection from spiritual attacks, sickness and injuries. Greater is He who is in us, than he that is in the world. Thanks for your support.

While we are away another Boardstore shop will be opening in Caloundra (on Dec 1st). The shop will work the same as the current skate shop in Maroochydore, to provide a platform to reach out to skateboarders with a positive message and a safe place to hang out.
Many of the staff who serve in the skate ministry are going home for Christmas which leaves just four of us to continue working here, your prayers will be very appreciated in this season as there is still a lot to be done.
The purpose of the business aspect is to help fund missions, just some of the things God has put in our vision include a portable and skate-able trailer, indoor skatepark and regular outreaches both in Oz and overseas.

Just last week I had an opportunity to share, with the YWAM base, some of what’s on my heart with making God known. I also got to play a very challenging youtube clip shown to me by a friend, which deeply convicted and inspired me to take a good look at my heart and ask the Lord to line it with His. Hope it challenges you aswell.

God is Worthy of Praise

I want to praise God for how good He is. The bible says “Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; His greatness no one can fathom.
This month I have some answers to prayer and God is worthy of my praise, but things don’t have to be going well for you to praise God. The road we are travelling isn't always easy but He loved us before our current circumstances, man He loved us before we were born! Look at the cross and understand His great love for mankind; it doesn’t get any more beautiful then that.

This past few weeks I've seen; family members take huge steps in faith towards God, life threatening circumstances healed by the power of prayer, friends experiencing God for real, areas of sin being reduced through accountability to others, finances for outreach trips and I saw God come through for a friend who needed some stability in her life.
Pray and believe it's going to happen cause our God is trustworthy.

The orphanage and house for the Blind in the Philippines now has a new kitchen, a blessing after years of prayer from the ministries working there. The conditions are much more hygienic for the awesome people there who call it home.

The skate ministry joined Youth Street for a celebration festival in Townsville last weekend. There was a mix of live music, fun youth activities and skate competitions going on to celebrate the opening of the new skate plaza at Riverway. Being a council funded event we couldn’t openly share the gospel to everyone but constant prayer went into the event and we were able to share with lots of kids one on one about God’s love in our own lives. Lots of seeds were sewn into the youth street ministry which already is known and loved by the youth of Townsville.

We are a blessed nation only because of God. “When a critical mass of people have the Bible and apply what it teaches in their lives, a nation is transformed. When a critical number of people abandon the bible and stop applying it to their lives, that nation begins to destroy itself.” – Loren Cunningham. Let’s not become one of the nations that lose sight of the truth, let’s rise up in obedience and live and enjoy the blessings that are intended for us.

We have been having weekly skater bible study in the Boardstore to help disciple each other and our new friends who are coming to know the Lord. If you think you might be interested we meet at the Boardstore, 110 Aerodrome Road, Maroochydore 4558. We usually get pizza for dinner and skate afterwards together it kicks off from 6pm onwards. Skatechurch is consistently growing each month with the Gospel being shared every time we meet. It’s been a big part of the skateboarding scene here on the Sunshine Coast for so many years and it’s currently based at Coolum Baptist Church once a month at 3pm.

Feel free to pray for any of our ministries that I mention in this blog, also for our Townsville outreach that we are doing at the end of this month. We will be filming a documentary for the Australian Christian Channel as well so pray that God would be glorified in this awesome opportunity.

Trip to Southern California

It’s almost been a whole year now since I was gave up my old unfulfilling lifestyle, built on my own strength, and decided to live fully for the glory of our living God.
So far it has been a rollercoaster and non stop adventure and it just keeps getting bigger, better, faster and stronger. I am living a life that I could never have possibly imagined and I give thanks and praise to God for all of it cause if it wasn’t for Him I’d be still trapped in my old ways, routines and sinful nature.

Recently I took a trip to the US with Rob to visit the annual trade shows held in Southern California.
While we visited we met an amazing family who welcomed us into their home for a few days and provided us with an opportunity to share our hearts with their youth group in LA and helped inspire them to be Christ-like and how it can go hand in hand with who we are as individuals. We were able to bless some of the youth who skate by giving them our skateboards and they blessed us with their thankfulness.

The trip helps with building relationships in the industry that we serve in. God opened lots of new doors that are going to be interesting to walk through over the next few months; He has always got big plans ahead for all of us and its exciting waiting to see it all unfold.

For half of the trip we got to catch up with Sean who is part of our YWAM sunny coast family, it was good to see him still going hard for God praying with homeless people and building on the dreams God has placed on his heart. He is preparing to go to parts of Asia like Indo and Philippines and make a documentary about the sex trade industry.

If you'd like to pray for him in that he is looking to use this film as a tool to open peoples eyes to a cause that really needs prayer and support. He is still looking for investors to help fund the project.

During the trip I felt like God was really encouraging me to look at the big picture of where I was heading Sometimes our dreams seem impossible or our troubles seem to big for us to get over but His word says “I can do everything through him who gives me strength” PHILIPPIANS 4:13

Darwin Impact Tour '09

Friends and Supporters,

This past week I’ve been in Darwin for the Impact Tour which was a really powerful time. Three local boys came with me to join some other skaters and performers on tour that has been going for the past 6 weeks.

The tour performances include amazing feats of strength, Hip Hop Dancing, Islander Dancing and obviously skateboarding. We all came together in Schools and Events all over the city of Darwin to share the message of salvation.

Over the course of the week God was able to sow seeds into hundreds of lives through the shows and we saw around 40 people come to except Jesus as their saviour and be set free from junk in their lives. We also helped get them plugged into the Youth Street Program that was launched while we were there so the leaders can follow up on their decision and help disciple them.

Behind the scenes I grew a lot in leadership and boldness through spending time with the Lord and times of team worship and prayer. The Boys who came with me had their eyes opened to the Lord and saw Him move through those involved. They experienced times of hearing God, sharing testimonies and I believe they saw God in a very real and personal way.

If you like you can pray:

-For the people who saw the shows and were touched in some way, that God would continue to speak to their hearts and remind them of His great love for them.
-The people who accepted Christ as their saviour, that solid people and friends to surround them in their walk with the Lord and keep them accountable.
-For the boys who experienced God for the first time, that they wouldn’t forget Him as they step back into the real world and face people who don’t get it. Pray that they would have a new boldness to proclaim Jesus as Lord and stand firm the foundation of the Bible.
-I am off to the U.S in less than a fortnight, just pray for God’s favour with meeting key people, wisdom and protection from the enemy.

On the Rise

Hi All,

Things are cruising along nicely in the ministry right now with lots happening we could use your prayer support.
The Boardstore gallery is opening this Saturday the 1st August. We are excited to see some new doors open in the ministry through art workshops and networking with other artists on the Sunshine Coast.

We looked at a warehouse last week for the indoor skatepark. It meets all the requirements we were praying for like a one year lease, size ect. An indoor skatepark is one of the reasons behind One Friday’s existence so that it can become the largest local hub for skaters to hang out even in bad weather. It will also enable a consistent place to run one on one skate coaching by having the indoor park.

I got to speak at Coolum Skate Church a few weeks back and it went really well. I spoke on some things that God had put on my heart this past few months and I believe God spoke to a lot of people through it. There were 30 odd skaters and parents there listening and I have heard some good feedback about the afternoon.

It was also cool to speak at one of the High Schools in Caloundra this week. I got to share to both the middle school and senior school about my DTS journey and some of the cool ways I experienced God on outreach. Once again I believe God sowed some good seeds into lives of the students through the opportunity and I am blessed to have had that time with them.

Well flights are booked and the boys are ready as we prepare for our trip to Darwin for the impact tour. We will be skateboarding in this tour, which also includes super strong men and hip-hop dancers. We will be visiting High Schools in the community and running some big events as a platform to share the message of God’s heart for the world.

Hey All

Things are going swell here with me. God has continued to shed light on my paths, constantly leading me in all my decisions. Opportunities are opening up every week to provide my needs and to pour out blessing on others.

Because we have alot of artists and photographers in 'One Friday' we are currently working on opening a gallery next to the Boardstore shop. Here we believe the ministry can extend into a new area of outreach, by showing "Street" style art (to go with the theme of the skate shop), limited edition art books and skateboards and to host weekly art workshops. If it takes off it could potentially be an effective ministry so pray that God will open new doors through the gallery.

Friday night BBQ's at Alex Skatepark are still going strong. There is alot of kids regularly showing up every week to have some dinner, skate and hang out. Its has been a good effective way to rub shoulders with alot of the local skaters. Keep praying for them.

This week I have been offered a position on our YWAM values team. Our base has 6 core values that we are committed to. As part of the values team I will take ownership of one of the values and pray and discuss different ways to incorporate the value into life on the base. I think it will be challenging but I'm excited to participate in this new role of leadership.

Some of our guys are on a week long snowboarding camp (Powder Hounds) held down south. They are leading and rubbing shoulders with over 100 youths, feel free to keep them in your prayers for opportunities to share the gospel.

One Friday Skate Ministry

Greetings,

I am back working full-time in a not for profit organisation called ‘One Friday
Skate Ministry’. The main purpose of this ministry is to simply share the gospel. One Friday is a team of volunteers who are dedicated Christians, connected and accountable to YWAM Sunny Coast. We are committed to working with churches and other ministries to reach youth locally, interstate and internationally through things like skate church, skaters bible, skatepark bbq’s, bible study and weekly evangelism.
It’s a combination of people all playing different roles to reach a variety of people rather than just one group. Our mission field stretches from local skatepark grommets through to international pro skaters and company owners.

A basic overview of One Friday Skate Ministry:

Boardstore
- A local hub for people to hang out.
- It helps to promote and finance One Friday events. (business with a mission).
- A platform for connect with local skaters.
- It’s a constant Christian presence that is there everyday unlike weekly meetings or events.

Trinity
- Also helps to finance One Friday events. (business with a mission).
- Reaches out to the business world in the skate industry e.g companies, shop owners and pro’s.
- Resource for other ministries.
- Opens lots of new doors for our ministry.

- Promotes and finances One Friday events.
- Avenue to reach out to the Skate, Motocross, Music and Surf scene.
- Tentmaker for YWAMers.

What’s next for One Friday?

Indoor Skatepark
- Will exist as a venue to run One Friday events like skate coaching for high schools, skate camps, skate church, skate competitions, provide a safe place for youth with a positive vibe to hang out and rub shoulders with our team.

Portable Skate Trailer

- A trailer that folds out into a mobile skatepark, so we partner with churches and hold skate church in carparks all over the Sunshine Coast. Also to take it to small towns that don't have skateparks and use it as a platform to share the gospel through skating.

I graduated DTS!!! I have been praying about my next move and I am excited about the things God has for the future. I decided am going to continue serving in the skate ministry full-time. I have passion to provide opportunities for others to have a relationship with the Lord and skateboarding is an effective platform for me to do that right now. In Youth with a Mission there’s like 25,000 staff world wide, none get paid, and everybody is a volunteer responsible for their own fundraising. God has challenged me to live by faith like the other 24,999 and rely on him for my needs. I take comfort in His words in Matthew 6:25-34. It’s humbling to throw this out there but I believe this is where God has brought me and I will follow obediently. I can see that it also provides an opportunity to get you involved in the ministry. Some might have too many commitments or family situations that prevent them from being in full-time ministry, so supporting us missionaries is another good way to further the kingdom.
Even Jesus was supported in his ministry “After this Jesus travelled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. DTS Outreach Conclusion

Philippines rocks! One of the best experiences I’ve had! Pastor Pat Aguilar has been our contact in the Philippines and he is solid. He is connected with churches all over the Province and YWAM in the Philippines. By the Grace of God he and his family Pastor a church in NAGA, run a house for the blind and an orphanage. As you can see from the reports of the past few weeks we have covered a lot of ground here all because God connected us with the right people.

I guess the biggest thing that struck me is how joyful, generous and on fire the christians are in the Philippines. On the flight home I couldn't put my finger on what they had that I couldn't find here in Aus, I feel like God showed me that I had a few distractions here that robbed me of that joy, generosity and intimacy with God. The whole experience was priceless and I am stoked one going back to the Philippines in the near future.

CWC Skate & BMX Jam '09

Hey!

We had our rescheduled skate event. After a sunny morning storm clouds came and rain drops started to fall so I invited the skaters to join our team in prayer. We all prayed and the clouds literally split and went around us and the skatepark. The local church team was in the city, where it was pouring rain, praying for us when they arrived to help with the event they were surprised to see the complex was the only place where it didn’t rain. We all witnessed God’s power right there.

The event went smooth with a lot of skaters and BMX riders coming from all over the Philippines some travelling up to 12 hours just to be there. We ended the event after three hours and not a single drop of rain. I had an opportunity to share the gospel before the prize presentation with a sick sunset on one side of the sky and a rainbow on the other.

The team split up and handed out every tract and skaters bible we had. We witnessed, prayed and gave a bible to this dude, a local skater who was having some troubles in his life. All the events provided good soil for us to sow good seeds into.

Through the relationships we have built up over the past five weeks skating and through the skate jam we have seen many skaters here connected with the local church. I can confidently say from our time here, God has laid the foundations of a ministry that will plug skateboarders into Christ. It would be awesome to see a skate church planted and you can join me in prayer to see it happen. I have suggested it to a lot of the guys who regularly skate and they are super excited about the idea. Pray that God would continue to open the doors.

Kingdom Builders Summer Youth Camp '09

Wats up?

We have been helping out for the first annual ‘Kingdom Builders’ youth camp here in Camsur. For four days ten youth groups came together in an amazing beachside resort to meet with God through worship, lecture content and evangelism. Pastors, local missionaries and our team did some teachings about ‘Kingdom Building’, ‘Blessed Generation’ and ‘Evangelism’ where the campers are required to take notes to take home.

Our team’s main roles also involved leading the campers in five smaller groups having morning devotions and playing ‘Amazing Race’ style games. On the third day we took our teams out into the surrounding town to invite people to our concert night and hand out tracts. It was a powerful night; a lot of people came to watch performances like skits, dances and worship. On the final day 22 young people were set free and committed their lives to follow Christ, were baptised by the pastors and are now rooted in solid churches here in NAGA city, Glory to God.

I can’t really find words to describe the time that I had there, I was really touched and had a lot of revelation along with most people there. It really is the best life following God and obeying his will for your life. I’m so glad I obeyed and took a leap of faith to break free from my old life and I haven’t looked back since.

Philippines Outreach Part Two

Hey,

We started the week all guns blazing, the team split into 2 smaller teams to speak at different churches in NAGA city. Wouter and I spoke at a new church then joined their youth fellowship that afternoon.
We ran a two day study course on Evangelism in NAGA, on the first day each member of the team spoke on different aspects of witnessing and on the second day we hit the streets acknowledging opportunities to share the gospel and make friends. It went well, the students commented on how beneficial the course was and Pastor Pat is stoked to see them applying evangelism to their everyday lives.
On Thursday we joined with Pastor Pat and some local missionaries to visit remote villages delivering school supplies to the children who live there. It was a rad experience, we were able to help document the day and be a blessing wherever possible. Lots of the village children had never seen westerners and the local missionaries mentioned that it had a good impact on them.
The weather has been against us in the skateboarding ministry, with a Typhoon right near us; it has been raining and flooding alot.
Though four of the local skaters have been coming to the church regularly to hang out and play music. We have been building solid relationships with them; God has really helped us connect despite language barriers. We invited them to a youth camp we are doing next week, they are excited to come so pray for them, also one of them is from a Muslim family so pray for breakthroughs for him with his family.

Other prayer requests:
-Just for the Youth Camp in general, that God will do some great things in the hearts of the youth attending, we are expecting over 200 kids.
-That God would continue to give us favour, when hanging out with the local skaters and youth here.
-For good weather as we have had to postpone our skate event to the 16th of May cause of rain.
-Keep the team unity prayers flowing too, and that we would listen and hear God when needed, we can’t do it without Him.

Philippines Outreach Part One

Greetings from the Philippines,

We’ve reached the end of our first week here and I’m excited to report that things are going well. On our first night whilst travelling from Manila to Camarines Sur we got a flat tire, but in the time we stopped like 20 locals came out from a near by village to help, its funny how God give us opportunities to witness in the times we least expect, one of the guys had just got out of prison and wanted to change his life. Some of us gave out our email addresses to keep in touch with them, it was a awesome time.
We are staying with Pastor Pat Aguilar, his wife Chusey and their awesome family, they run an orphanage/house for the blind about a km from CWC (Camsur Watersports Complex) where the skatepark is. We have had the privilege to assist in their ministry and speak at his church service and youth group, the blind people have also ministered to us, they give amazing massages.
We have arranged daily transport for the skaters in the city to come and skate the skatepark at CWC, they love to skate the park but usually they can’t afford the cost travel. Now we can skate with them and continue to build relationships with them, they are very thankful. Already a group of skaters has asked if they can attend Pat’s church.
There are lots of opportunities and people who want to know God here so we have lots of stuff planned to encourage the existing church and to introduce the skaters Jesus, so please continue praying for us.
We feel strongly that God wants us to remain in the Philippines to continue the ministry here, instead of moving on to China like we planned.
Wouter had some crazy symptoms earlier in the weak, we felt it was a form of spiritual warfare, so we prayed and had him looked at by a doctor, now he is 100%. Also Rueben our Australian contact here in the Philippines has been suffering from back pains so we have been praying for his healing, he seems to be doing a lot better now, even his doctor agrees which is awesome aswell.

The power of prayer is so strong, we need all the prayer support possible to take ground, if you feel like you want to pray for us here are some key things:

- For the skaters here in the Philippines, that their hearts would be open and ready for God’s truths, also that any barriers between us and them will be broken down. E.g. language, culture ect
- Against spiritual warfare, here in a third world country its not like anything I have seen back home in Australia, its very real and the more ground the Lord takes here through us, the enemy strikes back.
- Strength for our team, we a relying on God everyday and some of the plans He has we don’t feel we are up to the challenge, but nothing is impossible with God on our side!
- Wisdom and obedience in all the decisions we make e.g. Choosing to stay in the Philippines an extra 2 weeks instead of going to China.
- Team unity.

Your prayers are priceless; give all the glory to God for all that is happening here. Thank you.

Outback Outreach Part Two

Hey,

We made it home safely, back on the Sunny Coast, what a trip!
On our trip back to the Coast we stopped in Longreach, Emerald, Gladstone and Hervey Bay. At each stop we did a mix of skate/scooter/bike comps, sausage sizzles and hung out skating and mingling with the locals there.
We worked alongside local ministries, churches and chaplains at each stop. We had opportunities to share our testimonies and give out bibles at each event. The channel 7 news met us at Hervey Bay, which was a larger event and did a story for the local news which was pretty fun.
The week ended with ‘Reach the Beach’ skate comp at Coolum which is held annually, I had the opportunity to MC the comp and hand out plenty of skater bibles as giveaways in between skating heats, our team was there all day setting up, running registration and building relationships. Overall the day turned out a big success even with bad weather and rain against us. I also had fun reminding the people about the true meaning behind Easter on the Mic.
Our team leaves for the Philippines this Tuesday so keep us in your prayers.

-Obedience to what God requires of us there.

Outback Outreach Part One

Hey everyone,

This is my first post, right now I'm with my DTS outreach team, we are sleeping on a church floor in Gladstone. We on our way home from an amazing week in Mt Isa.
We worked with "Youth Street" (YWAM Mt Isa's youth program) running daily skate and art workshops as well as skating and teaching Religious Education in some of the local schools all to promote a big event that we held at the local skatepark and PCYC (Police Citizens Youth Club) that weekend.
God gave us some amazing platforms to love on people. He put us on the front page of the local paper, a radio interview and favour with the local skaters.
The weekend event was successful with roughly 100 people showing up on the day, some to show some skills others simply to watch.
We gave out over 40 skaters bibles, I shared my testimony and impacted some groups of kids on a few occasions as well.
Boy did God provide too, we had a good place to sleep, He gave us energy we didn't have, He gave us fast recovery from injuries and every where we went there was a favour far beyond what we could bring by ourselves.
Please pray for our trip home as we stop in small towns to continue running comps, sharing testimonies and handing our skaters bibles.
